Froogle, Google's shopping search engine, applies the power of Google's search technology to one very specific task: locating sellers that offer the item a buyer wants to find and pointing them directly to the website where they can buy it.
There are multiple ways to access Froogle, both voluntarily and involuntarily. Involuntarily methods include Google spidering your product web pages and adding them to their Froogle product index, or if you have a Yahoo or eBay store, your products may be automatically indexed. However, the most effective way to access Froogle comes through voluntarily actions on your part through submitting a data feed (txt file) directly to Froogle.
Having your products submitted automatically to Froogle (Google Base) is great for product companies that use a database because the automated process can simply connect to your database everyday and compile a new list of product information. The process will then take this information and format it for insertion into the Froogle system. This automated method will save your business time, money and dramatically increase sales because the automated process will handle the entire process for you.
The remaining products are crawled throughout the Internet as most other keywords are sought. Currently merchants can setup their accounts and sell on Froogle right away! There is no cost or cost per click through associated with adding your products to Froogle. Merchants can sign up for free and monitor how Froogle displays their product. This technology is open to the public at no initial cost or commissions. Depending on how many items your company may want to sell on Froogle; you have to create a data feed file, which can be done with any spreadsheet software or by a text file.
A product title is needed which is the same keyword that you would use on the product's web page. Froogle can also require the product's manufacturer and model number. This is important in order to make a more accurate price comparison. The product will also need a description which includes the use of your website's primary keywords. The description should be original and not copied off another website. You should also upload a photo of the product and include the price of the product.
Tell Google about your items. You can use Google Base to tell Google about your items by submitting a bulk upload file containing information about each of them or by submitting information one item at a time via a web form; the more info you provide, the more likely Google is able to send you qualified customers. Be sure to choose 'products' or 'vehicles' as your item type.
You can create data feed file in two formats- tab-delimited (spreadsheet) or XML. Tab delimited or spreadsheet file is very easy to build and manage the products information. In a spreadsheet program, attribute names will appear in the first row at the top of each column (your header row). Item details will be in the rows below your header row, under their respective attribute names. Attributes name may be title, description, price, link (product page), image link and etc.
